Selection and Installation Rules of V-Belts for Slurry Pumps

The selection and installation of V-belts have a significant impact on the performance of slurry pumps. The most commonly used transmission method in slurry pumps is the V-belt drive. Standardized V-belts have a trapezoidal cross-section and are made in endless loops without joints. They are classified into various types such as A, B, C, D, E, and O. From type O to type E, the cross-sectional area gradually increases. The selection of the V-belt model should be based on the transmitted power and belt speed.

1. Proper Model Selection
The selected belt type must match the designated V-belt specification. Otherwise, improper fitting in the pulley groove may occur. When replacing a V-belt, it is recommended to bring the old one to a professional supplier to avoid selecting the wrong type.

2. Installation of V-Belts
Before installation, if the distance between the two shafts is adjustable, shorten the center distance first, place the belt onto the pulley, and then adjust the center distance as required.
If the distance between the shafts is not adjustable, place one V-belt into the pulley groove, rotate the other pulley to fit the belt in, and repeat the process until the whole set is installed. Do not use tools to force the belt into place, as this may cause elongation or improper tension.

3. Proper Belt Tension
The tension of the V-belt must be regularly checked and adjusted to meet operational requirements.

• If the belt is too loose, it may slip, increase wear, or fail to transmit power effectively.

• If the belt is too tight, it may elongate, deform, or cause damage, while also overloading the pump’s main bearing and clutch bearing, leading to accelerated wear.

Correct inspection method: Apply about 2 kg of vertical pressure at the midpoint of each belt. The appropriate deflection should be 20–30 mm. If not within this range, adjust accordingly.
