How to Handle Slurry Pump Clogging: A Practical Guide

Common Clogging Scenarios and Solutions

1. Solid deposits in the volute casing (horizontal slurry pumps)

  • Cause: Heavy solids settle and harden inside the volute, restricting flow.

  • Solution: Manually or mechanically remove the accumulated deposits. In severe cases, disassemble the pump casing for thorough cleaning.

2. Misalignment between the shaft and the stuffing box

  • Cause: Manufacturing errors or incorrect installation can cause shaft/stuffing‑box misalignment, leading to packing wear and leakage.

  • Solution:

    • After installation, always verify alignment with dial indicators or laser tools and correct any deviation.

    • If the seal water ring is severely worn, replace it with a new one.

    • If the seal water line is blocked (preventing water from reaching the packing), clear the line and ensure seal water is clean and free of debris.

3. Blocked impeller or suction/discharge piping

  • Cause: Oversized solids or fibrous material accumulate in the impeller passages or pipelines.

  • Solution:

    • Clean the impeller and piping thoroughly.

    • If the impeller is excessively worn or damaged, replace it.

    • If leakage occurs at the packing gland, tighten the packing evenly to restore proper sealing.

4. Excessive discharge head or pipeline resistance

  • Cause: The pump may be operating beyond its design head, or pipe friction losses are too high.

  • Solution:

    • Reduce the discharge head by lowering the delivery height or shortening the pipeline.

    • Reduce pipe resistance by increasing pipe diameter, using smoother materials, or eliminating unnecessary bends and valves.

Preventive Maintenance

To minimise the risk of clogging and extend pump service life, implement a regular maintenance schedule that includes:

  • Periodic inspection and cleaning of the impeller, volute, and piping.

  • Checking shaft alignment and bearing condition.

  • Monitoring seal water flow and pressure.

  • Replacing worn wear parts (impeller, liners, packing) before they fail.

By following these steps, you can effectively resolve clogging issues and maintain reliable slurry pump performance. If problems persist after trying the above measures, consult the pump manufacturer or a qualified service technician for further diagnostics.
