Pump knowledge -- Slurry pump concept and applications
1.Concept of pump: all machines that are used to lift liquid, transport liquid, and increase the pressure of liquid can be called “PUMP”
2. Slurry pump: the pump that transports mixture of water and solids particles which contains dross. Speaking from their principle, Slurry pumps produced in Shijiazhuang China are centrifugal vane pumps.

3. Applications of Slurry Pumps:
1) This type of slurry pump is mainly used for slurry transportation in converter dust removal water system, blast furnace gas washing water system, continuous casting turbid water system and steel rolling turbid water system in iron and steel plants.
2) In the power industry, it is used for flue gas desulfurization systems and ash removal systems. Moreover, larger slurry pumps have been well used to act as the desulfurization main circulation pumps, for which, along with the dredging pumps mentioned later, the discharge diameters have been achieved 1 meter in China, and they all work well.
3) Slurry pumps are also widely used for the transportation of pump which contains abrasive solids in mining, metallurgy, coal, and environmental protection industries, such as the slurry pumping work in Metallurgical Concentrator, coal sludge and heavy medium transportation in coal washing plants, and river dredging etc..  
4) In the chemical industry, some corrosive slurries containing crystals can also be transported. At present, about 80% of the applications of small and medium slurry pumps are used in concentrators in the mining industry.
5) In the field of seawater sand selection industry, the application of slurry pumps have also been well-known and recognized by the customers. Due to the habit of some industries, slurry pumps are called sand pumps in the seawater sand selection industry, and dredging pumps in the the river dredging industry, where there are super-large slurry pumps in use, which are used on super-large dredgers.
But in terms of the structural characteristics and the slurry transported by the pump, they can all be called slurry pumps.

Features of high chrome alloy impellers and their application


Abrasion-resistance: With very high hardness, high chrome alloy can effectively resist the abrasion of solid particles, making sure that the impeller can keep good performance during operation;
Corrosion-resistance: high chrome alloy is able to resistant the corrosion of many chemicals, including acid, alkaline and other high corrosive medium, making sure that the impeller will work steadily under harsh applications;
High efficiency and energy saving: High chrome alloy impeller has a unique design, compact structure, and works with steadiness, which will help decrease energy consumption, thus increasing the operating efficiency of the slurry pumps.

High chrome alloy impellers are widely used in mining, metallurgy, power plants and so on for the slurring transporting system. When used on mine sites, high chrome alloy impellers are used to pump slurry containing high concentration of solids; and when used for metallurgy, they will be used to handle tailings which contain high hardness, high corrosion slurries.


Features of rubber coated impellers and their application


Abrasion-resistance: rubber material has rather good abrasion resistance, and will help reduce the impeller abrasion from solid particles, so that the impeller working life will be prolonged;
Corrosion-resistance: Rubber impeller is able to fight the erosion from weak acidic medium, making sure the stable operation of the impeller under generally corrosive applications;
Lower noise and vibration: Rubber has a good flexibility, and will effectively lower the noise and vibration generated during the pumping process, therefore changing the working environment.

Rubber impellers are widely used in coal, power plants and environmental protection industries. For instance, in coal industries, customers will use rubber impeller to transfer coal mud, gravel etc., and when used in environmental protection, rubber impellers are adopted to handle waste water that contains corrosive (acidic or alkaline) medium.


Difference of High chrome alloy impellers and Rubber impellers when used for slurry pumps


Abrasion: High chrome alloy impellers have very high abrasion resistance, and has obvious advantages for pumping high density, high hardness sludge. Whereas, although rubber impellers can also resist abrasion, compared with high chrome alloy, rubber impellers are inferior;
Corrosion: High chrome alloy can resistant the corrosion of many different chemicals, including strong acid and strong alkali, but rubber impellers are more suitable for weak acidic medium transfer;
Applications: High chrome alloy impellers are more used for mining, metallurgy where high density, high hardness, and high corrosive slurry needs to be pumped; and rubber impellers are more used for coal, power plants, and environmental protection industries where low concentration, low hardness and weak corrosive medium needs to be transported;

High chrome alloy and rubber impellers have its own features when used in slurry pumps. When selecting the impeller material, it should be determined according to the specific working conditions and the characteristics of the conveying medium to ensure the stable operation and efficient performance of the slurry pump.

First, to determine the required head value


in the selection of filter press feed pumps, users or designers tend to give a pressure value, you need to communicate fully with the user or designer at this time, and confirm if the value provided is the gauge value or the value of clear water.
filter presses have specific requirements for filtration pressure values, in most cases this value is the table pressure value, it should be converted into liquid column height (clear water value).

Second, select the appropriate driven type.


After selecting the appropriate model of the feed pump based on the suitable product type and parameters, it is necessary to consider choosing the appropriate driven type for the slurry pump.
At present, the driven type adopted by the feeding pump include direct and indirect driven.
on the one hand, considering the working characteristics of the feed pump, on the other hand, in order to make the conveying coal slurry overflow parts have a long service life, feed pumps are mostly used indirect driven type.
The most commonly used indirect drive form in the coal washing industry is belt drive. If funds permit, using direct drive with a frequency converter for speed regulation is the best driven type.
