Solid particle size and hardness:

Slurry pump: If the solid particles in the medium are large (greater than a few millimeters) and have high hardness, such as ore particles, metal waste slag, etc., a slurry pump is a better choice. The open or semi-open impeller of the slurry pump and the larger overcurrent channels can effectively prevent blockage, and its overcurrent components made of wear-resistant materials such as high chromium alloys can withstand the impact and wear of particles.

Slurry pump: When the solid particles are small (usually less than a few millimeters) and have a soft texture, such as clay, sludge, etc., a slurry pump is more suitable. The closed impeller of the mud pump helps efficient energy transfer of fine particles of mud. Although its overflow channel is relatively small, it does not cause clogging of small particles of mud.

Media concentration:

Slurry pump: Slurry pumps are the first choice for slurries with high concentrations (solid volume concentrations up to 50% - 60% or even higher). It can maintain good transport performance under high concentrations of solid particles. For example, when coal slurry is transported during coal washing and selection, the coal slurry concentration is relatively high, and the slurry pump can work effectively.

Mud pump: Mud pumps are more suitable for treating mud at medium and low concentrations (usually around 30% - 40%). If the mud concentration is too high, it may lead to a decrease in flow rate, reduced efficiency and even blockage of the mud pump.

Media viscosity and fluidity:

Slurry pump: Slurry usually has a lower viscosity and has better fluidity because of the weak bonding force between solid particles. In this case, the slurry pump can effectively transport the slurry using centrifugal force. For example, under the action of slag particles, the overall fluidity of slag slurry is relatively good, and the slurry pump can quickly transport it.

Slurry pump: The viscosity of mud may be higher, especially muds containing more clay components. The mud pump is designed to pay more attention to the transportation of high viscosity media, and its impeller shape and pump body structure help to promote mud with higher viscosity. For example, during the mud transport during oil drilling, the mud pump can handle it well because the mud contains a variety of additives and has a high viscosity.

Flow and head requirements

The required pump flow rate is determined based on the medium conveying volume in the actual working scenario. If a large amount of medium is needed to transport in a short period of time, such as tailings emissions from large mines or mud treatment in large water conservancy projects, a large flow pump needs to be selected. Slurry pumps and mud pumps have models with different flow ranges to choose from and should be matched according to the specific flow requirements.

The head is related to the conveying distance and height difference. If the medium needs to be transported to a longer distance or higher position, a higher head is required. Slurry pumps and mud pumps also have their own characteristics in terms of heading. The slurry pump has a wide heading range, ranging from several meters to hundreds of meters. According to the specific purpose of the mud pump, it can also have a higher heading in some water conservancy projects that require long-distance mud delivery.
