How to Fix Slurry Pump Gland Leakage?

Part 1. Observation and Analysis of the Leak

First, when encountering a slurry pump packing leak, we need to carefully observe and analyze it. Observe the leaking location, amount of leakage, and the operating status of the pump. If the leakage is large and the pump is newly installed, it may be caused by loose packing or improper installation. In this case, you can try to readjust the packing tension to ensure a good seal.

If the pump has been running for a while and the leakage is gradually increasing, it is likely caused by severe packing wear or aging of the gasket. In this case, you need to further inspect the packing and gasket condition so that appropriate measures can be taken.

Part 2. Targeted Remedies

1. Adjusting the Packing Pressure

For new or recently repaired pumps, if the packing is loose and causing leakage, you can correct it by adjusting the packing gland tension. When adjusting, be careful not to overtighten to avoid damaging the packing or the shaft sleeve. Also, ensure that the packing in the stuffing box is full and evenly distributed to ensure a good seal.

2. Replace the Packing

If the packing is severely worn and cannot be corrected by adjusting the packing tension, it is necessary to replace it with a new one. When replacing the packing, select the appropriate packing material based on the slurry pump model and operating environment, and follow standard replacement procedures. After replacement, readjust the packing tension and check for any remaining leaks.

3. Replace the Gasket

Aging the gasket is also a common cause of packing leaks in slurry pumps. If inspection reveals that the gasket has become hard, cracked, or lost its elasticity, it is necessary to replace it promptly. When replacing, use a new gasket made of the same material and specifications as the original gasket and follow standard replacement procedures.

4. Clean the Pump Body

If the surface of the slurry pump body is corroded by the medium, causing leakage, consider cleaning the pump body. To clean the pump body, first disassemble it and use a detergent to remove any dirt and corrosion from the surface. After cleaning, treat the pump body with a rust-proofing agent and reinstall the seals.

5. Enhance routine maintenance

To prevent frequent packing leaks in slurry pumps, routine maintenance should be strengthened. This includes regularly checking the condition of the packing and gaskets, promptly replacing aging components, and cleaning debris from the pump body and surrounding area. Also, carefully monitor the pump's operating status and address any abnormalities promptly.
