What Are the Dangers of Excessive Shaft Power to Slurry Pumps

Excessive shaft power will cause many harms to the slurry pump, which is mainly reflected in the following aspects:

What Are the Dangers of Excessive Shaft Power to Slurry Pumps 1

Hazards to the slurry pump itself

Exacerbating wear: Excessive shaft power means that the torque output by the motor increases and the load bearing the pump shaft increases. This will cause greater friction and impact force for the impeller, sleeve, seal and other components of the slurry pump to accelerate the wear of these components and shorten their service life. For example, the gap between the impeller and the pump housing may increase due to wear, resulting in a decrease in the efficiency of the pump and an increase in the amount of slurry leakage.

Causes mechanical failure: Excessive shaft power will cause the pump bearing to bear too high pressure and heat, which can easily cause the bearing to overheat and lubricate, resulting in bearing damage. In addition, shaft deformation and fatigue may also intensify, and in severe cases, shaft fracture may even occur, making the pump unable to operate normally and affect the continuity of the entire process flow.

Cause sealing problems: Excessive shaft power may cause shaft twitching and vibration to increase, which will disrupt the normal working state of the sealing device and make the seal more prone to wear, aging and leakage. Slurry leakage not only causes environmental pollution, but may also affect the performance of the slurry pump, and may even cause damage to the slurry pump due to lack of lubrication or cooling.

Hazards to motors

Overload heating: In order to provide excessive shaft power, the motor needs to output a larger current, which will cause the motor winding to heat up severely. Long-term overload operation will accelerate the aging of motor insulation materials, reduce insulation performance, and increase the risk of motor short circuit and burn.

Shorten the motor life: When the shaft power is too high, the electromagnetic force and mechanical stress inside it will increase, which will cause greater impact and vibration of the motor's stator, rotor and other components, resulting in damage to the motor's mechanical structure and reducing the service life of the motor.

Increase energy consumption: When the shaft power is too large, the motor needs to consume more electricity to maintain operation, which not only increases production costs, but may also lead to excessive load on the power system, affecting the stability and efficiency of the entire power supply system.

Hazards to the entire system

Impact process flow: Too much power of the slurry pump shaft may lead to unstable pump performance, fluctuations in flow and head, which cannot meet the requirements of the process flow. For example, in ore dressing plants, it may affect the conveying volume and conveying pressure of the ore slurry, resulting in the subsequent process links such as flotation and concentration that cannot be carried out normally, reducing production efficiency and product quality.

Safety hazards: Excessive shaft power may cause pump and motor failures, such as burning of the motor, rupture of the pump body, etc. These faults may cause casualties and property losses, bringing serious safety hazards to production.
